At JPL, we called it “a sporty landing.” The crash was a result of the contractor failing to do adequate systems testing that would have caught a design defect. The mechanical forces generated by the fast landing leg deployment caused a spurious signal by the ground contact sensor. This caused the flight computer to turn off the engine — many meters too high. The spacecraft dropped like a rock.
